The Petition!

If you're sick and tired of the food at UVM, have we got a petition for you. We're trying to get UVM to get their meal points accepted at restaurants and supermarkets in Burlington. Can you imagine, instead of spending $8 at Harris Millis, taking that same $8 and getting all you can eat pizza and wings at Manhattan's or a burger and sweet potato fries at VT Pub and Brewery?

Sign the petition!

Even if you don't have a meal plan anymore, please take a minute to sign the petition so that future students will be able to have the great food Burlington has to offer instead of being forced to eat in the dining halls.

The petition link isn't working, as it imputs the code to make a link in the link, instead of just "http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/854840639"
Figured I'd let you know.

Thanks. Fixed it. I also changed the date for this post so the petition stays at the top, if you were curious as to how someone posted from next month.

Don't buy the meal cards, you idiots. Guess what? Real money is accepted everywhere.

Hmmm... why would we get the "meal cards"? I can't for the life of me think of a single reason excpet... we're forced to! Pay attention, numbskull. As you would know if you went to UVM or had read any of a half a dozen places we mention it, it's almost impossible to get out of the meal plan when you live at the dorms.

My name is Patrick. I am a student at Champlain College and I own the infamous restaurant delivery service - 863 TOGO, Inc. or online at www.863togo.com. I often get questions from students regarding accepting meal points. I opened my business in June 2005 and signed up to accept catscratch in July. I would love to accept points! but... I am at the mercy of catscratch office at UVM. If I could accept it and even had to pay a $300 register fee, I would. I know how valuable it is for students to use there meal points and would love to see my business triple.

Patrick, your comment pretty much highlights the main points of our entire project. Businesses downtown would definetely be interested in accepting meal points and kids would love to use them off campus. The only problem is the policies of the UVM administration. How are we going to fix the problem?
SIGN THE PETITION!! and download a few forms and pass them around. We need more names on there and having a business owner like yourself really helps.

I just read the article in Seven Days and it gave me flashbacks. I graduated from UVM in 1997 and I STILL talk about how terrible the food was! I will never forget the way each dish in the dining hall tasted exactly the same (I am still convinced they had some sort of "flavor extractor" back in the kitchen). I sympathize deeply with you all. Good project, Good luck!

Hi, I put a link in support of your project on my site www.863togo.com and signed the petition. Anything I can do to help- let me know! Patrick, 863togo@adelphia.net

I don't live on campus now but when I did I purchased the cheapest meal plan possible and put extra money on Catscratch to eat off campus and go to City Market. Lots of other students do the same thing.

FORGET UVM FOOD...ORDER FROM WWW.865FOOD.COM OR WWW.FOURSTARDELIVERY.COM AND HAVE YOUR FOOD DELIVERED FROM MOST RESTAURANTS OF YOUR CHOICE IN BURLINGTON!

Hey Guys!

My name is Frank and I heard about your food problems at UVM.

If you need food, I have the largest and fastest food delivery service in Burlington which delivers for over 50 restaurants including Applebees, FuDa Chinese, Al's French Fries and many others.

You can find our food delivery at www.fourstardelivery.com (and now www.865food.com) or you can call us at 865FOOD.

Frank, we really appreciate your comment. Obviously you see how vital the UVM community is to local businesses. Would you be interested in signing a petition made up of signatures from the owners of local restaurants? We're considering making an additional petition just for business owners. Let us know what you think.

Frank...I have ordered from 865 FOOD before and I have to say the delivery service is in fact not very quick...its actually ridiculously slow.... and it costs 4 dollars for the service plus a tip... and the cost of the food...... we appreciate your support and your plug is amusing... but you dont accept points... so how does this help solve our problem ?... maybe you can sign the petition and write a letter to the school letting them know you would like to get points accepted at your service... if you do that... speed up your delivery time... maybe the 4 dollar cost of delivery wont matter to the students because they are using their points to buy food at places that dont make them want to barf

Actually, I have ordered from 865food many times and have always been satisfied with their delivery. I can sure understand an occasional slow delivery due to a ton of people ordering at the same time. There's only so much that 865food or anyone can could do in that situation.

BARF folks and friends,

I just recently heard about your little crusade for off campus food, and noticed your bashing of Sodexho. Since nobody else seems to be forthcoming to knock any sense into you, I guess it falls to me.

I am a student at UVM. I eat at the dining halls just like you do. However, I see no reason to condemn the food service with such viciousness as you have. Perhaps it's because I don't come from a wealthy family and most of my meals were homemade. Perhaps it's because I have visited and dined at many campuses in the country, including where my brother goes to school in Boston, and found that the food can be astoundingly unhealthy and disgusting. The fact is that I actually appreciate the food they serve us for the cost.

What was that? A voice of dissent? Well, obviously, this little momma's boy is just afraid of sticking it to the man, right? He probably doesn't even know what good food is. Well I got news for you, peaceniks. Though I may not have eaten out all the time like you, my father is a professional chef. I think that I am qualified in judging what good food is for myself.

This food at UVM is surprisingly high quality. Yes, that's right. High quality. There are far more choices than I'd expect. What, complaining about the amount of dining halls? In my brother's school, Berklee in Boston, there is exactly one cafeteria and one cafe. It's not like it's a tiny school. And if they want to get food off campus, well they pay for it with cash.

You should stop moaning and groaning about the food and just for once learn to appreciate the effort they put into the food here. There's more variety than most schools, and for the quality of food served, the price is quite reasonable. Well, you don't want to pay 8 bucks to go to an all you can eat dining hall? Fine then, get yourself some processed food out of a vending machine and do the math at exactly how much money you will lose. Maybe after a few weeks of eating chips and chocolate you'll wisen up to what you have and grow up.

While I applaud the effort and hard work that has been invested in this initiative I also feel that your efforts are missing the mark by trying to force Sodexho to let any Burlington food business take meal points.

Why should students have to go off-campus to get what they feel is a decent meal? If students truly feel that the problem is with the food quality, choices, and locations then why not circulate a petition to have the university address those exact issues with Sodexho? Using meal points off-campus isn't really addressing the problems that exist.

Another issue that we may want to address is the meal plan packages that are offered to students living on campus. The truth is that there is already a plan in place for students to make purchases off-campus using their catcard - it is called Catscratch. One poster indicated that when they lived on campus their parents purchased the lowest meal plan and supplemented this by adding money to catscratch which gave her the off-campus variety. Maybe Sodexho should offer a seperate option that could be something like a $500 retail point package allowing the student to supplement with catscratch or a plan that would cost something like $900 where $500 would be meal points and $400 would go on catscratch.
Thanks for letting me share my thoughts..........

To Anonymous #1 (after scotty miller). A few things. First, there is no reason to get personal. We have refrained from any personal attacks on individuals, and I'll tell you what I told another poster that insulted the dining staff. Insults get you nowhere. That being said, if you're going to be insulting at least get what you're saying straight and have it make sense. That we're rich kids is pure speculation. Most of the time I ate at home, just like you say you did. Also, calling us "peaceniks" doesn't make even the most miniscule amount of sense. What the hell does what we think of war have to do with anything???

Finally, there is one rather major thing that you didn't address: the petition. Sure, you love the food here. So what? Give me a coherent argument as to why being able to eat somewhere else if you want is so horrible and then we'll be getting somewhere.

to anonymous who thinks he knows stuff because his daddy's a chef,
I don't care if your dads Wolfgang Puck you are a fool. Personally I think the food at UVM isn't all that bad but what do I care if people want to eat downtown. Simmer it down,

oh yeah watch out for the peaceniks, tool

to anonymous comment after scotty miller,

Anyone who comes on a blog about university food and calls people "peaceniks" obviously doesn't know what they're talking about. Seriously what does "peace" have to do with anything at all related to this site. Should we call you "warmonger" because you call people names? No one is forcing you to eat off campus, you can go to harris millis all you want for all I care. We're just trying to offer people an alternative. Go around and ask any five random people on campus what they think of the food here and I bet you they don't think too highly about it.
